I have refrained my feet from EVERY evil way, that I might keep thy Word - Psalm 119:101
Do not let my heart be drawn to what is evil so that I take part in wicked deeds along with those who are evildoers; do not let me eat their delicacies. - Psalm 141:4
Do I not hate those who hate you, LORD, and abhor those who are in rebellion against you - Psalm 139:21
On the surface, hating evil sounds pretty simple does it not? We think of mass murderers, rapists, and all horrific acts when we think of EVIL. But that's not what the Lord says. Evil isn't according to our own standards, but God's. And His Word lays it out plain what is evil, and pretty much that it is ANY sin. Sin and evil can't be separated. And when we think of ourselves as "just a sinner" but not as EVIL, we don't have the right perspective on it. And the word says a man's heart is evil from his youth (Gen 8:21).
REALITY CHECK ==> I'm not a good person with bad habits. My heart is not just bad or so-so, it is EVIL and from it comes every wicked/sinful thing.
Self Evaluations: Do we HATE ABHOR evil? Are we running from it or turning to it? Do we try to minimize it, justify it? Are we uplifting, glorifying it? Have we refrained our feet in EVERY evil way? In ALL the areas of our lives? Or do we find pleasure in it, do we find pleasure in watching it? Do we find pleasure in keeping company with others who love sin and evil and hate God?
Have we become so detached from it that we have minimized what it is? EVIL! When we minimize the sin, the EVIL, that we enjoy, we are now lovers of the world and serving the prince of this world, Satan and not God. In the words of Paul "MAY IT NEVER BE"!
My prayer for the saints, my prayer for ME:
Lord keep my heart, continue to transform me and keep my feet, my eyes, my heart from turning to evil, loving evil, glorifying evil. Help me to choose the narrow path, help me to choose your laws and precepts and commandments before the world. My flesh and MY heart is deceiving and will turn so help me to rest and rely and abide in the Holy Spirit who has the power ALONE to keep me from evil. By the blood of Christ who died for my sins so that I may be made free from sin and evil and slaves to Him. Amen.
